Secret Word

Getting today’s word…

A daily word game about meaning

Secret Word is a free daily puzzle: one secret word a day, the same for everyone. You guess words, and each one tells you how close its meaning is, from cold to very hot. It is a little like a game of hot and cold with a dictionary. Start anywhere, follow the warmth, and see how few guesses you need.

Tips

  • Start wide: try words from very different topics (an animal, a food, a feeling, a place) to find where it is warm.
  • When you get warm, try things that go with your best word, not words that look like it.
  • Very hot words are often the same kind of thing: other animals, other tools, other feelings.
  • Stuck in the cold for a while? A hint shows a word about halfway to the answer.

Frequently asked questions

How do you play Secret Word?

There is one secret word each day. Type any word and the game tells you how close its meaning is to the secret word, as a number: #1 is the secret word itself, #2 is the closest word to it, and so on. Use the warm guesses to close in until you find it. You have as many guesses as you like.

What do the numbers mean?

Every word we know is ranked by how close its meaning is to the secret word. A guess ranked in the top 50 is very hot, the top 300 is hot, the top 1,500 is warm, and anything further is cold. The lower the number, the closer you are.

Is it about spelling?

No. Only meaning counts. If the secret word were ocean, then sea would be very hot and whale hot, but a word that looks similar, like open, would be cold.

How do hints work?

A hint shows a word about halfway between your best guess and the secret word. It is added to your guesses and counted. Use as many as you need.

What if I give up?

Press Give up and the secret word is shown, with the 100 closest words to it. It still counts as played, so your streak keeps going.

How is closeness worked out?

From how words are used across a huge amount of English writing: words that appear in similar places get similar meanings. It knows more than 80,000 words, and plurals count as their singular.

When is there a new word?

Every day at midnight UTC, the same word for everyone. Herd Plus members can also play past days.
