How to play Higher or Lower

You are shown two things side by side. The left one has its value revealed; the right one is hidden. Decide whether the hidden value is higher or lower. Guess right and it slides across to become the new anchor, and your streak grows. Guess wrong and the run ends — so every answer counts.

There is no daily limit and no signup. Play as many runs as you like, across 8 categories, and try to beat your own best streak. It works on phone and laptop, and your best score is saved on your device.

What is a good Higher or Lower score?

The categories

  • Country population and city population: which has more people.
  • Building height: skyscrapers and towers, from the Burj Khalifa (828 m) down.
  • Mountain height: from Everest (8,849 m) down to hills of a few hundred metres.
  • River length: from the Nile (6,650 km) down to rivers of 50 km.
  • Movie release year: which film came out later, from the 1920s to the 2020s.
  • Animal top speed and animal lifespan: which is faster, which lives longer.

Tips for a longer streak

  • Read the number you are shown first. A huge one (China, Everest, the Nile) means the next is almost certainly lower.
  • The middle is where runs end. When the shown value is ordinary, think about the hidden item on its own before comparing.
  • Movie years trip people up: sequels and remakes feel older or newer than they are.
  • Pairs are not coin flips: the game picks two items far enough apart to be knowable.

Higher or Lower is a free guessing game. You see one item with its value revealed and a second item hidden, and you guess whether the hidden one is higher or lower. Every correct guess extends your streak; one wrong guess ends the run.

Anything from 10 up. Across more than 18,000 runs on this site, half ended before a streak of 3 and the average was 5. Only 16% of runs reach 10, 5% reach 20, and fewer than 1 in 150 reach 50.

How do you play the higher or lower card game?

Deal one card face up. The next player guesses whether the next card will be higher or lower, then turns it over. Aces are high, and a card of the same value counts as wrong in most house rules. Keep going until someone guesses wrong; at a party, that player takes the forfeit.
