How to play hangman

A word is hidden and you guess one letter at a time. Every letter that appears in the word is revealed wherever it occurs; every letter that does not costs one of your six lives. Solve the word and a new one appears with your streak intact. Six wrong guesses and the run is over.

Every word comes with its category, which is the single biggest clue you get. Vowels are the traditional opening, and E is by some distance the most common letter in English — after that, R, S, T, L and N turn up in a great many words. You can tap the letters or just type them.

Questions

How do you play hangman?

A word is hidden and you guess one letter at a time. Every letter that appears in the word is revealed; every letter that does not costs you one of six lives. Solve the word to keep your streak going.

Do I get a clue?

Yes — every word comes with its category, one of 6: Animals, Food, Countries, Around the house, Nature, Sports. Without a category, hangman is really a guessing game about letter frequency rather than a word game.

What letters should I start with?

Vowels are the usual opening, and E is the most common letter in English by a wide margin. After that, R, S, T, L and N appear in a great many words.

Does it repeat words?

There are 150 words across the categories and each round draws at random, so repeats happen eventually but not often within a run.
