Everyone holds a wrapped gift. Roll the die, do what it says, pass to the next person. Two rounds, one timer, lots of swapping.
Roll to see what you do
The tables above are the most common version. Many groups write their own: swap with the person wearing the most red, swap with the youngest, everyone passes two places. Agree on the table before the first roll.
Tip: in round 1, opening is rare on purpose. Gifts move round the circle a few times before anyone sees what is inside.
The dice version is luck, not choice: nobody has to steal from a friend on purpose, which makes it easy for shy groups and families. The classic version is all choice: open or steal, and gifts freeze after three steals. That is the version people mean by white elephant rules, and the one our online game plays.

Start a gift exchangeEveryone sits in a circle holding one wrapped gift. Players take turns rolling one die and doing what the number says: open, swap left, swap right and so on. Round 1 ends when every gift is open or the timer runs out. Round 2 uses a new table to move the opened gifts around until the final timer, and then everyone keeps what they hold.
No. Use the free die on this page: choose the round, tap Roll the die and it shows the number and what it means. Pass the phone to the next player.
Set a timer for each round. About 5 minutes a round suits 10 people; add a couple of minutes for a bigger circle.
It is best for 6 to 15 people in one circle. With more, split into two circles or play the classic steal version, which our online game runs on everyone's phone.
Yes. Press Print the rules for a one-page sheet with both round tables.
